Council Meeting Published the Performance of CRCF in 2008


The 6th Board Meeting of the 2nd Council of CRCF was held on Jan. 17th, 2008 in the Great Hall of the people in Beijing. The Secretariat presented the magnificent performance of CRCF of 2008 to the board.


The foundation received 1.537 billion RMB (about 220 million US dollars) as donations from both domestic and overseas sources last year, nine times the figure of 2007, said Wang Rupeng, deputy-director of the board and the secretary general of CRCF.



Mr. Wang said ninety percent of the donations were sent to disaster-stricken area such as Sichuan and other earthquake-stricken areas in China. At the same time, the Red Cross Angel Program, which provides medical assistance to poor areas, received 104 million RMB, and the Fraternity Study Aid Program for poor students received 36.95 million.



In addition, the Angel Program helped to train 400 rural doctors, and provided aid for 7,800 people with leukemia, congenital heart disease, cleft lip and palate, deafness, paraplegy and cancer.



The Fraternity Study Aid Program trained 100 rural teachers, helped 107 needy students to complete their middle school study, and built 556 Red Cross libraries for rural middle and primary schools.



Wang said that more than 6.9 million people had benefited from the total of 2,194 clinics, 194 schools and 1,112 libraries had been built throughout the country by the end of 2008.



He said that the foundation planned to establish social supervision committees for reconstruction projects in earthquake-stricken areas so as to guarantee that the donations were used efficiently.
